KOFFIE

Already clocking in as a fully-formed band releasing music since 2013, Amsterdam-based septet KOFFIE have managed to distill afro-brazilian rhythms and a modern jazz funk feel into a unique sound that brings swings and smiles wherever they play.

The core of the band met at the Amsterdam Conservatory, when Valentijn Bannier met drummer Abe van der Woude, and they found inspiration in Fela Kuti and Tony Allen. Their natural chemistry and onstage energy led to a debut album in 2013 featuring vocalist Nassan Silva Lopes and an extensive tour, before penning their second record Éh Lady later in the same year. Honing their mix of world music, jazz, and funk grooves, with a topping of guitars, sax and synths, Éh Lady was recorded in Berlin at Lovelite Studios with Jochen Ströh (who also recorded luinaries such as Ebo Taylor, Tony Allen and Jimi Tenor), and earned them critical acclaim and an enviable live reputation.

Collecting their live experiences and well-practiced group dynamics, they went back into the studio, to capture a more refined version of their sound for their follow-up album Huntu. Recording all eight players together, they laid down several slices of atmospheric afro funk, which also saw Benny Sings join for a step into pop territory. It gave them the chance to take their music on tour all over Europe and beyond, including Istanbul Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival and the Secret Garden Party in England.

Their fourth album kokon sees them navigate the band’s way through Covid and other midlife challenges, to deliver a sleeker and more mature version of their energetic ensemble sound - more crafted and more layered, as they dive deeper into synthesizing specific sounds and tone combinations. It’s the natural evolution of a sound that’s tighter, funkier, and more fun than ever.
